What to Wear to No-Gi Jiu Jitsu

For your first no-gi Jiu Jitsu class, you do not need a complicated gear bag. The basic setup is simple: a fitted training top, grappling-friendly shorts, and clean athletic clothing that has no hard or dangerous parts.

1. Wear a rash guard

A BJJ rash guard is the standard top for no-gi training. It fits close to the body, reduces loose fabric during grappling, and is designed for the constant pulling, twisting, and movement of training.

A normal cotton T-shirt may be allowed at some academies, especially for a first class, but it can become heavy with sweat and bunch during rounds. Check your academy rules before class.

2. Wear no-gi or grappling shorts

Your shorts should allow unrestricted hip movement and should not have exposed zippers, metal hardware, or anything that could scratch a training partner. Purpose-built no-gi BJJ shorts are designed around those needs.

The waistband should stay secure during wrestling and scrambling without digging into your waist. Shorts should also allow you to squat, shoot, invert, play guard, and move your knees freely.

3. Spats or compression leggings are optional

Many grapplers wear compression leggings underneath shorts for additional coverage. Some wear them alone where academy rules allow it. If you are unsure, shorts over spats is a safe option.

4. You train barefoot

BJJ is normally practiced barefoot on the mats. Wear sandals or slides off the mat so you are not walking barefoot through bathrooms, parking lots, or other common areas and then returning to the training surface.

What should you avoid?

  • Shorts with exposed metal zippers or sharp hardware
  • Jewelry, watches, necklaces, earrings, or rings
  • Clothing with pockets that can catch fingers or toes
  • Dirty or previously worn training gear
  • Street shoes on the mats

Do you need expensive gear for your first class?

No. Clean, safe athletic clothing is enough to try many beginner classes. If you decide to train regularly, purpose-built rash guards and no-gi shorts become worthwhile because they are designed specifically around grappling movement and fit.

A simple no-gi setup

The easiest approach is one matching training set so you know the pieces work together. The Jiu Jitsu Cowboy Full Set combines a rash guard and no-gi shorts in one setup, or you can shop each piece separately.

Always check your academy's dress code, especially if you are preparing for competition, because rules can differ by gym and event.
